A delegation from The Representative Office of Norway to the Palestinian Authority visited Gaza Community Mental Health Programme
A delegation from The Representative Office of Norway to the Palestinian Authority visited Gaza Community Mental Health Programme. The delegation included Mr. Hans Oseas Langaker , Embassy Secretary and Mr. Ghassan Shakhshir, Program Advisor and Ms. Anne Mette Strand. The delegation met with Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei, Director General of GCMHP and a number of head of units. This visit aimed at acquainting the delegation with the mental health and human rights situation in Gaza Strip and the services provided by GCMHP.
Dr. Abu Jamei welcomed the delegation, thanking them for Norway’s continuous support to the Palestinian people. He delivered a presentation about GCMHP’s establishment by the late Dr. Eyad Al-Sarraj, and the activities and services provided by the Programme to the Palestinian community through the three community centers. He also stressed on the important training courses conducted by GCMHP which serves governmental institutions and NGOs working in Gaza Strip. Dr. Abu Jamei highlighted the importance of the higher diploma in community mental health program, adding that the diploma’s graduates are currently working at important international and governmental institutions.
During the meeting, Dr. Abu Jamei talked about the psychosocial, political and economic situation people in Gaza are experiencing. He illustrated the negative impact of the siege imposed for years on the Gaza strip which affects the people’s mental health. Dr. Abu Jamei shed the light on the electricity crisis and its impact on people’s mental health. Dr. Abu Jamei also discussed with the delegates the hard living conditions people in Gaza are experiencing which affected both the educational and health sectors. Moreover, he highlighted the challenges facing GCMHP, including the difficulties in securing the needed financial resources.
In their turn, the delegation raised some inquires about the activities and services provided by GCMHP, and how GCMHP responds to the people’s increasing needs. The delegation reflected positive feedback about GCMHP’s work , stressing that the services provided by GCMHP are very fundamental to the Palestinian community. At the end of the visit, GCMHP’s staff accompanied the delegates for a tour at Gaza Community Center.
